It’s hot outside and your house is getting warmer by the second. You’re dripping with sweat, but you are also looking forward to a cool room when you get home from work. What can you do?
There are many things that you can do to make your home cooler in the summer without having to break the bank or go all out. Here are some tips for keeping your house cool this summer:
- Keep windows closed during the day and open them at night if it’s not too humid. This will keep air circulating so that rooms don’t heat up as quickly after being occupied for a while. If it’s too humid outside, then just close them all together since humidity doesn’t really affect cooling power like heat does.
- Install shade screens, blinds or curtains that are made from materials that will block out a lot of sunlight like solar shades for example.
- Wear lighter clothing. Dress lightly and have less layers on your body to allow cooling air to circulate better between your skin and clothes. Avoid wearing jackets and sweaters because the heat can’t escape as easily when you wear them, which makes it feel hotter instead of cooler since they absorb moisture in the air through sweat and other bodily functions.
- Add more lighting inside the house if you think it’s too dim, but don’t use lights during the day because they generate heat in rooms just as sunlight does from outside sources. Use only light bulbs with minimal heat emissions.
- Avoid using bulky electronics like the television when it’s hot outside or turn off unnecessary appliances that generate heat in rooms.
- Open windows and doors to get more ventilation in your house for a while during the day so that air can flow freely through indoor space. You may want to use fans if you don’t have air conditioning since they will keep circulating cool air around the room after you’ve opened up the window and door to let humidity escape outdoors.
- Add an indoor plant or two inside near open windows or other sources of light so that they can help absorb moisture from humidified air before it gets too stagnant and uncomfortable inside.
