Why is Your A/C Leaking Water?

If you notice that your A/C is leaking water, or if it has been dripping for a while and you haven’t noticed yet. There are three reasons why your air conditioning unit may be leaking water.

The first possible reason is because the condensation pan under the outdoor unit of your A/C has filled up with water and overflowed onto the ground. This can be a result from selecting an improperly sized or badly placed cooling coil, or when there isn’t enough airflow (either in or out) through your air conditioning system. You may have to contact a professional for this one as it might require replacing some parts on your AC.

The second possible cause could be due to blocked condensate drains inside of either one or both units indoors or outdoors. There are plenty of ways you can stop these drains from being clogged such as simply moving them away from other objects that block their flow like furniture and landscaping features outside or near the unit. But if that doesn’t work or your drains are clogged with debris, you’ll have to contact a professional or get some help from an expert in plumbing and drain cleaning services.

The third cause of A/C water overflow could be due to condensate pan overflowing because it is unleveled or tilted upwards too far which causes the level of liquid inside to spill over onto the ground outside under the AC outdoor unit. You can fix this by leveling out any slopes or making sure there’s enough headroom for excess fluid to flow down into drainage tubing properly without spilling over onto anything else on its way out.

The fourth reason your A/C may be leaking is because the drain line could have become clogged or there’s a break in it. This might also stem from cooking grease, soap scum and other debris that blocks their flow like furniture and landscaping features outside or near the unit. But if that doesn’t work or your drains are clogged with debris, you’ll need to contact a professional for help or get some help from an expert in plumbing and drain cleaning services.

Solutions: One of the best ways to make sure this never happens again is by investing in an outdoor condensate pump which will automatically manage overflow problems so they won’t happen as often. Another way would be to hire HVAC professionals who can come and investigate the problem.
